Scale
- 6 cups day-old bread cubes (French bread or brioche)
- 1 (21 oz) can apple pie filling
- 3 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing the dish
- Powdered sugar or caramel sauce, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
- Spread half of the bread cubes in the dish, followed by half of the apple pie filling. Repeat with remaining bread and apple filling.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apple layers. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
- Let sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the custard to soak into the bread.
- Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
- Cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with caramel sauce if desired.
Notes
- Use homemade apple pie filling if preferred.
- Best with sturdy, day-old bread to absorb custard well.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge and reheated.
