Description

These easy matcha cookies are made with nutty brown butter, giving them a rich, complex flavor that perfectly complements the earthy taste of matcha. Crisp on the edges and chewy in the center, they’re an irresistible treat for green tea lovers.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp matcha powder (culinary grade)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Optional: white chocolate chips or chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it turns golden brown and smells nutty. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the brown butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until well combined.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, matcha powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a dough forms.
  6. Fold in white chocolate chips or chopped nuts if using.
  7. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  9. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are set.
  11. Let the cookies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use high-quality matcha for the best flavor and color.
  • Do not skip chilling the dough—this helps prevent spreading.
  • You can freeze the dough balls for future baking.
