Description

A traditional Serbian comfort dish made with layers of potatoes and ground meat, baked in a creamy egg mixture. It’s simple, hearty, and perfect for a family meal.


Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef or pork
  • 1kg potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 2 tbsp sour cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F).
  2. In a skillet, heat oil and sauté onions until translucent. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Add ground meat to the skillet and cook until browned. Season with paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Lightly grease a baking dish. Layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom.
  5. Spread the cooked meat mixture over the potatoes evenly.
  6. Top with the remaining potato slices.
  7. In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and sour cream (if using). Pour the mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  10. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with pork or a mix of both.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg to the egg mixture for extra flavor.
  • Serve with a side of fresh salad or pickled vegetables.
