Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon sugar
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and sugar.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently with a spoon until just combined (do not overmix).
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it about 4-5 times. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
- Roll out the dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut out biscuits using a round cutter.
- Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- Remove from the oven and allow the biscuits to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Make sure to use cold butter for the best texture.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can use regular milk with a teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice to make a buttermilk substitute.
- These biscuits are best served warm with butter or jam.
