Description

This Homemade Bread Recipe yields a soft, fluffy loaf with a golden crust. Simple and made with pantry staples, it’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying with butter straight from the oven.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more as needed)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until combined, then gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes, until it has doubled in size.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Use bread flour for a chewier texture if desired.
  • You can brush the top with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
  • Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 4 days or freeze for longer storage.
