Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 large egg
Cheese Filling
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Garlic Butter Topping
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted, for brushing)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
- Prepare the Dough: Add the flour, salt, softened butter, and egg to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Evenly sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the dough.
- Form the Roll Log: Tightly roll the dough from the long side into a log shape. Slice the log into 12 equal rolls.
- Second Rise: Place the rolls in a greased baking dish or pan. Cover and let them rise for another 30–40 minutes until puffed.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready for baking.
- Prepare Garlic Butter & Brush: Mix the melted butter with minced garlic. Brush this garlic butter generously over the tops of the risen rolls.
- Bake the Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
- Final Touch: After baking, brush the rolls again with the garlic butter mixture and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute part of the mozzarella with cheddar cheese for a sharper, more pronounced flavor.
- To make ahead, refrigerate the unbaked rolls overnight and bake them fresh the following day.
- These rolls are excellent as a side dish to pasta, soup, or salad.
