Description

These Homemade Garlic Cheese Rolls are soft, cheesy, and packed with garlic buttery flavor. Made with a yeast dough filled with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, they are perfect as a savory side dish or a delicious snack. The rolls are brushed with garlic butter before and after baking to enhance their aroma and taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 large egg

Cheese Filling

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted, for brushing)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Add the flour, salt, softened butter, and egg to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Evenly sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the dough.
  5. Form the Roll Log: Tightly roll the dough from the long side into a log shape. Slice the log into 12 equal rolls.
  6. Second Rise: Place the rolls in a greased baking dish or pan. Cover and let them rise for another 30–40 minutes until puffed.
  7. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready for baking.
  8. Prepare Garlic Butter & Brush: Mix the melted butter with minced garlic. Brush this garlic butter generously over the tops of the risen rolls.
  9. Bake the Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  10. Final Touch: After baking, brush the rolls again with the garlic butter mixture and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute part of the mozzarella with cheddar cheese for a sharper, more pronounced flavor.
  • To make ahead, refrigerate the unbaked rolls overnight and bake them fresh the following day.
  • These rolls are excellent as a side dish to pasta, soup, or salad.
