Description

Festive red, white, and blue swirled sugar cookies perfect for patriotic celebrations like the 4th of July or Memorial Day.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into three equal parts. Leave one plain, dye one red, and dye the other blue.
  6. Roll each dough into a rectangle of equal size between parchment paper.
  7. Layer the dough rectangles on top of each other, then gently roll them together into a log to form a pinwheel pattern.
  8. Wrap the dough log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until firm.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  10. Slice the dough into 1/4-inch thick rounds and place on prepared baking sheets.
  11. Optionally, press sprinkles onto the edges of the cookies.
  12. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  13. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring to avoid adding too much moisture to the dough.
  • Chill the dough thoroughly to help the cookies retain their shape.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
